Update for Drama!

Drama 9:  On Monday, we will continue with the extended role play but Mr. Judd will be the TOC for Ms. Jorgenson.  Make sure you make some notes about how you dressed and who you had interactions with so that you can write this up in your journal.

You should LEARN YOUR LINES for your Shakespeare scenes as we will do them on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Drama 8:  Make sure you have completed all your journals.  Learn your lines for the Aesop plays.  You should think about what your group is going to wear and what you can do for your framework.  There should be a tableau here and there in your presentation and also a mime and choral speaking.  Show me what you can do!

I hope you all had a nice day off.  I went to a virtual workshop about how to include the First People's Principles of Learning into our classes.  Lots of aspects of drama do reflect First People's learning styles -- we sit in a circle so that everyone can be seen and heard, we tell stories, a lot of our learning is hands on and experience-based and we work by establishing good relationships in the class.

What is unspoken?

Drama 9

Your subtext scene:

A:  I hate you!

B:  I hate you even more.

A:  I hate you because you don't care about anything.

B:  I don't care.

A:  Hey, listen to me for one minute.

B:  No, you listen to me.

A:  I don't want to.

B:  Okay, then don't.

(Pause - 5 seconds!)

A:  Okay.

What is happening in this scene?  Think of two ways you could perform it.  Make them very different!  Think of "stage business" -- some sort of activity that doesn't necessarily stem from the words in the script.  Make strong choices.  Don't decide that you actually don't care.  It's always best if you do care!

Journal:

Which commedia dell'arte scene was the best?  Why do you say so?  Who was the funniest actor in the class?  Why?  How did your scene go - what was good?  what needed improvement?

Have you ever said to anyone that you hate them?  What made you say that?

Drama 8:

Read your Creation of the World story out loud several times.  That will help you learn your lines.

Journal:

Which fairy tale mime was your favourite?  Explain why you liked it.

How do you think the world was created?  Could you make a play about it?  Which character will you play?  What will you wear?

The play's the thing!

Just an update on what we're up to.

Drama 9 -- We are finishing the performances of your Seinfeld monologues  Remember, speak super clearly and project your voice and try to deliver in the energy and emotion departments.

Today we will start performing the commedia dell'arte projects.  I am looking forward to lots of laughs.

Drama 8 -- Today we will see your fairy tale mimes.  This is your first big presentation, so make sure you remember costumes and focus when you get to rehearse at the beginning of class.  You will find with light and sound that your presentation really feels like "real theatre".

Journals are due today.

Happily Ever After

Remember to wear a black shirt on Friday!  It is to bring awareness to issues of racism and intolerance in our communities and honours Martin Luther King's birthday and Black History month.

Journals:

Grade 8:  Which fairy tale have you chosen?  Why did you choose it?  What role will you play?  How will you present your character?  How did you decide on the cast?  What is the climax of the story?  Why do you think so?

Grade 9:  In three sentences, describe your plot.  Who are you playing?  What will you wear?  What will you do for your lazzi?  Why is that funny?  Who has led the group?  Has anyone presented difficulties for the group?  What is your funniest joke?  What is your best line?

Emotional Memory

 Journals for January 8, 2021

Drama 9:  Actors use a technique called "emotional memory" to create the sense of true emotion on stage.  An actor will try to remember a time when they experienced the feeling of the character they are playing.  In the monologues you are preparing, what emotions are the characters experiencing?  Think of a time you felt this same way.  What were the circumstances of that experience?  How did it manifest itself (physically, emotionally)?  What did you actually do about the situation?

Remember, you will be performing your monologues on January 18 and 19.

Drama 8:  What should Ms. Kosar know about you?  You should write about your past drama experiences (if you have any; if not, say that).  Do you have stage fright at all?  (Probably you are not alone in this.)  Why did you take Drama?  (What do you hope to learn or do in the class?)  Do you do any sort of performing (musical, athletic, magic, etc.)?  Add anything you think you would like to share.

Remember, you will recite "All the world's a stage" on January 13.

Journals are due on Tuesday!
